Motoring & Fuel Saving Tips

8 Ways to Save Fuel

  • Cut your speed – a car consumes around 30% more fuel at 70 mph against 50 mph.
  • Drive smoothly – reduce aggressive acceleration and braking, the more consistent your speed the lower your fuel consumption.
  • Lose weight – clear your boot of non-essential items.  The heavier the load the more fuel your vehicle consumes.
  • Reduce drag to increase your efficiency - remove your empty roof rack & avoid opening windows at high speed.  Use the air con at high speeds rather than opening your windows, it is more fuel efficient.
  • Cut the air con and heat – at low speeds open your windows instead of using gas-guzzling air conditioning.  Over-heating your car then having to open the windows is a waste of energy and lowers your fuel economy.
  • Lower your revs – change into a higher gear as soon as possible to keep your revs at economical levels (approx 2500 or under for petrol and 2000 or under for diesel cars).
  • Don’t be idle – if you’re likely to be at a standstill for 3 minutes or more, switch off the engine.  It will be more economical to restart when you need to than keep the engine idling.
